Choose by Region
Wine varies from region to region just as the rest of the natural world does. In France, they even have a term to describe the growing characteristics of each place where grapes are grown: Terroir. Apart from differences due to soil, altitude and weather, regional differences between wines may also be down to production methods, which, although becoming increasingly homogenised throughout the wine producing world (and in the 'New World' in particular) still varies widely.
So, the taste of wine is affected by where the wine is from, and understanding regions is a good guide for helping you choose wine. For instance, Australian red wines increasingly have very powerful flavours and lots of Oak. By comparison, French red wine is generally more subtle and less alcoholic. Of course there are exceptions everywhere, experimentation is the key.
